Top 5 Matcha Places in Ghent

Let’s be real, student life runs on caffeine. But sometimes coffee just isn’t it. Too jittery, too basic, too… 9 a.m. lecture energy. That’s where matcha steps in, smooth, green, and healthy💚.

Ghent might be known for its beers and canals, but lately, there’s a quiet matcha revolution happening in its cafés.

From cozy study corners to Instagram-worthy latte art, these are the five places every matcha lover (and matcha-curious student) needs to check out. Because let’s face it, studying goes down way easier with something green and frothy in your hand😊.

Here is our top 5 :

  • Le bal infernal
  • Aura coffee
  • Goya coffee
  • WASBAR
  • WAY Speciality coffee bar

1. The Crown Jewel

If you’re looking for the perfect matcha spot in Ghent, Le Bal Infernal easily takes the crown :)

Le Bal Infernal's matcha is smooth, slightly sweet, and just the right kind of comforting, perfect for a cozy afternoon 🔆

What makes this place really special, though, is its atmosphere. The café is filled with shelves of second-hand books 📚, mismatched chairs, and a laid-back, friendly vibe that makes you want to stay for hours 😊.

Whether you’re studying, catching up with friends, or just taking a quiet break, Le Bal Infernal has that rare mix of good drinks and good energy that keeps you coming back.

2. Aesthetics meets matcha

A little hidden at Ketelpoort 1, Aura coffee is the perfect spot if you are looking for the most aesthetic place to grab your next matcha🍵.

The interior is minimalist but warm and inviting, perfect for a study session and also for a yapping date with your friends 💗.

Aura coffee is a total matcha paradise 🍵. From Strawberry Matcha to Mango Matcha, every cup looks like it belongs on your Instagram feed. Not into matcha? Aura's coffee game is just as strong ☕ , perfect fuel for those long study days or lazy catch-ups with friends.

It’s not just the drinks that are picture-perfect; the snacks are total show-stealers too! 🍪 If your sweet tooth’s calling, Aura Coffee has a lineup of freshly baked cakes and cookies that’ll make you forget your diet real quick. Matcha lovers, grab the matcha cookie (we know you want to). Not feeling green today? We suggest to go for the strawberry cookie or treat yourself to the crème brûlée cake — it’s basically happiness in dessert form🍰. Aura Coffee has this calm energy that somehow motivates you, maybe it’s the lighting, maybe it’s the matcha talking. All we know is that it’s a must-visit for Ghent students who want to switch up their study routine. So next time you need a break from the library, grab your laptop, order a drink, and let the good vibes (and caffeine) do the rest ⚡🦁.

3. The Boho-Chic Hideaway

Boho charm, good energy, and a matcha latte that doesn’t taste like regret. That’s Goya Coffee in Ghent, a spot that proves cozy doesn’t have to mean boring.

The laid-back atmosphere makes you forget time exists. We came for the matcha latte, stayed for the vibe, which was something you can't experience everywhere- slightly imperfect, perfectly cozy, and just what your overstimulated brain needs.💆

And the matcha latte itself- it's more grounded than your morning affirmations.🍵 A bonus to the experience are the homemade pastries, which are unique every day and it always feels like a surprise, waiting for you. And the smell... trust us, you won't be able to resist it!😋

If you like soft chaos places and earthy energy, definitely give it a try. What's more, some interesting handcrafted art piesces are wating for you to explore them all over the cafe.🖼️

We bet you will love Goya as much as we did from the first visit!💚

Opening hours:
Monday- Friday: 08:30- 18:00

Saturday: 09:00- 18:00

Sunday: 10:00-  18:00

4. The green dream with clothes clean

If you think doing laundry is boring, you clearly haven’t been to WASBAR yet. This place is the definition of multitasking magic, where you can sip a matcha latte, grab lunch, and wash your clothes all at once! 😍

You can go classic with a smooth, creamy matcha latte, try something a bit fancier like the pistachio matcha (yes, it’s as good as it sounds), or keep it simple with a matcha tea, basically, green happiness in a cup.🍵💚

And the best part? You don’t have to stop at drinks. WASBAR serves delicious meals too (we tried the Mojo Dojo Bagel Burger — totally worth it, no regrets!) perfect for a relaxed lunch while your laundry spins away in the background.🍔👚

WASBAR’s menu has a great mix of comfort food and lighter options, so whether you’re in the mood for a full meal or just a drink break, you’ll be happy here.

Opening hours:

Daily: 09:00 - 19:00

5. The final gem on our list

Right in the heart of Ghent, just a 4-minute walk from Korenmarkt, Way Speciality coffee is perfect for a chill break, great matcha, and a few delicious treats✨

Sweet treats and drinks

Looking for a cozy place with great matcha and an even better atmosphere? Let us introduce you to WAY! And since matcha is basically our personality at this point, we went straight for it.

Way's version is super comforting, it's our go-to when the sky is grey (which is... pretty often here) and we need that cozy feeling . And the cool part? It also has an iced version for sunny days, so yep, you're covered in every season in this café🌿.

And yes… Way even has a matcha cake. So if you’re team “more matcha = more happiness,” you’re in the right place ✨ It’s honestly hard not to grab a little treat when you’re here, everything just looks too good.

We highly recommend you try the chocolate and orange bun from the photo as well as the cinnamon croissant! 🍊 Crisp on the outside and so soft on the inside, it is the perfect sweet treat to have with a warm drink 🍵. The peanut butter & jelly cake is always one of the first to sell out so come early if you want to snag one! ☕✨

So whether you’re exploring the city, catching up with a friend, or just taking a moment for yourself, this café is definitely worth a stop. Calm vibe, sweet treats, and a delicious matcha : we love it 💚

Opening hours :

Monday to Saturday : 08:00 - 18:00

Sunday : 09:00 - 18:00
