3. Smash that burger - Nub Smashburgers

Nub Smashburger Burgers

You can find hamburgers everywhere in Ghent, but for a “smashed burger” Nub is where it’s at.

Nub is a new restaurant in Ghent, opened by 2 childhood friends Lauria Domunico and Sami Yazidi.

But why is it called smashed burgers you may ask? Well as they fry the burgers, they crush them and that creates a concentrated, caramelised flavour. The trend started in Los Angeles but the two friend added their own twist to it .

They make the buns with potato starch, which gives them a more tender texture. For the filling, you can choose from four options: original, special, crispy chicken or vegetarian. The original is with fresh beef, mustard and ketchup, the special with fresh beef and house sauce and the vegetarian burger with falafel and hummus.

Further on the menu:

Fresh lemonades, plain fries, fries with cheese, sweet potato fries, and cake with Daim, Milka, Toblerone or cheese to finish. Sounds like music to the ears.

Nub is a very affordable with burgers ranging from 9,90 euros 11,90 euros.

Nub is located in the center of Ghent, which means that it’s easy accessable. When coming from the station Ghent Sint-Pieters, you can take the tramline 1, 4, 2. It’s 10-15 minutes walk from Zuid station.

Burger Boutique Burger

Everywhere in Ghent you can eat burgers very easily. But for a real guilt-free burger, you have to be at Burger Boutique. This cozy burger restaurant is near Overpoortstraat and Sint-Pietersplein. Thanks to their extra crunchy bun and their delicious burger, this is truly a burger you won't regret.

At Burger Boutique they have a various menu with their own boutique beef burger but you can also find  chicken or fish burgers here.

In fact, the burger of the month was the beef burger delux. This one features Black Angus beef, cheese and truffle mayo. Further on the menu you will also find fries, sweet potato fries and wedges with herbs and garlic.

5. The all time favorite - Ellis Burger

 Ellis Burger Burger

Ellis gourmet Burger's burgers rank #1 on our list! The burgers are pimped with additional alternative ingredients or substitutes giving them a whole different taste experience. For example, during our restaurant visit, I took the new Alpine Burger that features fresh raclette cheese instead of regular cheddar, highly recommended! Afterwards, we sampled one of several house classics, the Ellis Classic Cheese & Bacon. This burger is brought with a house-made Shack sauce that is incredibly delicious.

The concept is very nicely worked out within the restaurant. Ghent's restaurant has a large wall with all the information about the building you are in, this ranges from things that happen in the kitchen to the activities that happened in the building before Ellis Gourmet Burger came along. Hygiene is a minus point within this chain. For example, we found the restaurant floor to be dirty, as were the restrooms.

Other dishes are also available at Ellis Gourmet Burger restaurants. It is possible to have a steak or a pan of stew. Before digesting the tasty burgers, you can also have a small appetizer first with a pint or homemade lemonade that they also offer on their tap system. In addition, there is also finger food available, we took the churos with parmesan cheese but unfortunately these did not please us, the texture was very flat and the cheese was very plastic and not melted.

The burgers are highly recommended, but for other things you unfortunately should not be at Ellis Burger. Hygiene is not as it should be, and the dishes we sampled besides the burger were very bland in taste. In the end, our blog does revolve around the top 5 burger places in Ghent, and for that they definitely deserve 5th place in our ranking.
