Ghent is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, with an exceptional cultural history. And it has some wonderful museums where you can wander around a couple of hours. We selected a top 5 of those museums that as a student, you can't miss out on!

1. MSK, the museum of fine arts

The MSK stands for museum of beautiful arts (Museum der Schone Kunsten) . It is located not far from the 'Citadel park' on the east side. We suggest you walk a while in the park and then go visit the large collection of middle ages art works. The museum represents a lot of Flemish art works but also a lot of French paintings. The MSK also offers a large amount of sculptures you could watch all day!

2. S.M.A.K. , the museum for contemporary art

This museum of contemporary arts is located not far away from the MSK, also next to 'the Citadelpark'. S.M.A.K. stands for ‘Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst’. This means that it’s a relatively new museum. It is well-known for its permanent collection (Karel Appel, Andy Warhol,…) and for its provocative exhibitions. We suggest to go to an exhibition and then take a tour in the museum. The exhibitions over there are unreal!

3. Design Museum

The design museum is located in the heart of the touristic area of Ghent. It is settled in a small street and is a 18th century mansion. The mansion itself could also be a museum because it’s an original representation of how the houses were in the 18th century. When you go inside it’s completely different, it’s modern and new. The museum possesses a trend-setting collection of Belgian designs. It also shows international top-class objects. It includes objects from art nouveau to contemporary avant-garde design. And who knows, maybe you would have some new idea’s for your studio?

In this museum, the past of the city is illustrated but also what the future should look like. STAM refers the visitor to the city itself and to Ghent's cultural heritage. So come and see what your student city was like in the past.
