Eating Frites at the Great Butchers's Hall
Ghent’s most typical chip shop is right in the centre, against the wall of the Great Butchers’ Hall. A small counter, no frills, just good frites with a generous dollop of mayonnaise, escargots at a great price and all sorts of croquettes and frikadels. All served by Filip in a wonderful Ghent accent.

A wide range for vegetarians and vegans
The portions are probably the biggest in the whole of Ghent. The home-made tartar sauce (also available in a vegan version) is certainly worth trying and the vast offering of snacks makes it difficult to choose indeed.
Although there is a long queue sometimes, it is certainly worth the wait.

Eating frites into the wee hours
De Gouden Saté in the student area is famous because it only closes for a couple of hours a day. Their speciality is a ‘Julienke’, named after one of the frites stand’s former owners. You can’t eat your frites on the spot, but don`t worry: they taste even better on your way to one of the local pubs.

Beef stew sauce at its best
The home-made beef stew sauce (‘stoofvleessaus’) at De Papegaai is highly recommended. The frites here are deep-fried in vegetable oil. De Papegaai serves a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan food. You can enjoy your frites in the cosy dining area or outside on the terrace weather permitting.
