As a student in Ghent it can be often hard eating out as well as sticking to a budget. Ghent is a very student friendly city and provides a number of affordable and tasty places to eat for a very reasonable price. Since coming to Ghent a month ago I have been able to find an abundance of student friendly restaurants in this student friendly city. Grab a bike or hop on the tram and you will discover a new place to eat in no time. You may even get distracted by the amazing scenery on your way.
1: O'Tacos
Serving up french style tacos for an affordable price in the city center of Ghent. Packed full of fries, cheese and sauce O'Tacos is the perfect comfort food for a student on a budget. All you have to do is choose what filling you want and what sauce and O'Tacos does the rest. They have vegetarian options too. They offer a student deal for €5 which gives you a medium taco and a soft-drink. A perfect quick lunch if you are looking for something new.
2: Jack Burger
Burgers are always a go to when it comes to a simple and tasty meal. Jack Burger takes simple burgers to the next level. With burgers like the Famous Jack( Parmesan,caramelized red onion, rocket and pesto dressing),Italian Jack( Mozzerella, cheddar, bacon and sundried tomatoes) and the Veggie Deluxe Jack (hazelnut burger, tomato,pickle,cheddar) there is something for everyone. All burgers are under €8 and for an extra €5 you can get their signature wedges and a drink.
3: Soup Lounge
Is there anything better than a freshly made soup and sandwich on a cold day? Look no further than Soup Lounge. Located in the heart of the old town Soup Lounge offers freshly made soup, sandwiches and quiches daily. They offer 4 different varieties of soup each day and you can add on your own touch such as meatballs, croutons and cheese for no extra charge. For under €7 you get a giant bowl of soup with whatever add ons you like as well as two types of bread, butter and an apple.
The soup's are made two feet from where they are served making it super fresh and healthy.Their kitchen has a giant glass window where you can see your soup being made each day. Soup Lounge is perfect for these cold winter afternoons when you are looking for something cheap and healthy.
4: Bocca
Bocca is a 10 minute walk from the student dorms at Mercator. It is right next to Patrick Foleys Irish pub where they host various student nights. It offers all the pasta you could ever dream of at a great price. With at least 20 different types of pasta sauce and toppings to choose from it is no wonder that there are always queues out the door of Bocca. It is the place to be for freshly made pasta in Ghent.
For under €10 you can get a huge portion of pasta. Perfect for the hungry student. There are two outdoor seating areas that overlook the canal. They are always full of students on sunny days. If you wanted a but more luxury once in a while they also offer a sit down restaurant in the back where the prices are the same. It is always booked out so be sure to reserve a table.
