Sint-Baafskathedraal
The first monument to be mentioned is the Sint-Baafskatedraal. This incredible monument was built in the 12th century and is one of the main tourist attractions in Ghent. The church was dedicated to Johannes de Doper.
Belfort
Next there is the Belfort. This fantastic monument is 95 meters high, which is incredibly high. People started building the Belfort in 1313, so it's a very old building as well.
Gravensteen
Another well-know building in Ghent is the 'Gravensteen'. This castle is the only remaining medieval fortress in Flanders. The building of this monument started in the ninth century. It is one of the most charming constructions in Ghent.
Sint-Pietersabdij
Another impressive building in Ghent is the Sint-Pietersabdij. It is situated on the 28 meters high Blandijnberg. This means that it is situated on the highest point in Ghent. It was built in the seventh century and rebuilt in the tenth.
Jacob van Artevelde
The last monument that I thought needed to be discussed in this blog is the statue of Jacob van Artevelde. Jacob is best known for beng a rebellion leader during the Hundred Years War.
Bye for now
That were five impressive monuments in Ghent. However, there are still a lot of monuments that did not make this list. These might be discussed in a later blogpost.
See you next time!
